Google has kept quiet about how many Nexus 7 tablets it has sold, but Asus isn't so reticent. According to the company's CFO, sales are close to one million units a month.
Even though it's name isn't on it, Asus is the manufacturer of the hardware for this Android-based device, so it is in a position to know.
When CFO David Chang was asked by The Wall Street Journal, he said, "At the beginning, it was, for instance, 500K units a month, then maybe 600, 700K. This latest month, it was close to 1 million."
This raises the possibility that the Nexus 7 might be the second best selling tablet in the world, behind Apple's iPad. Of course, the main competitor for this tablet is going to be Apple's iPad mini, which isn't set to launch until Friday. Therefore, it's not possible yet to compare sales of these two.

Not surprisingly, the Nexus 7 has a 7-inch touchscreen. This has a 1280 x 800 resolution with a 216 ppi pixel density.This tablet runs Android 4.1, but an upgrade to Android 4.2 is expected soon. It is built around an NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor with a quad-core CPU and 12-core GPU, plus 1GB of RAM.
Most versions depend on Wi-Fi for Internet access, but a cellular-wireless version was recently announced. The device also includes Bluetooth, NFC, and GPS.
Other features include a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera but no rear-facing one. There's also a 4,325mAh battery which Google says is good for 9 hours of video and 300 hours of standby.
There are 16GB ($200) and 32GB ($250) versions available now from the Google Play store.
